3.5 Compound Interest Formula

As you've found leading up to this lesson, compound interest problems can become very complicated very fast. The solution to this complexity is the compound interest formula. Below are the lecture notes & examples from 3.5, Compound Interest.

3.4 Intro to Compound Interest

Easily said, compound interest is interest on interest.

3.3 Savings Accounts & Simple Interest

This section examines savings accounts and simple interest. Though you will rarely see simple interest anywhere other than the 1st payment on a mortgage, it is the foundation of all other types of interest.

Remember the factors of how much interest you get (or pay)...

Principle

Rate (APR)

Time (years)

How much are groceries?

We are well into our term project on creating a Frequency Budget Plan and Annual Budget Matrix. Many have asked "How much should I set aside for groceries?". Well...our friends at the USDA have done this calculation for us. Below is the chart, it factors in your age, gender and how much you eat. Remember, the more groceries you consume, the less you're dining out which is EXPENSIVE!

Soon I will post a rubric so you know how to get full credit and beyond on your projects.

Best of luck these next few intense weeks before a long winter's nap!

Wages Survey Form

Good Morning! We are beginning to collect data for our semester budget project. The first step is to create a google form that asks: 1. How much did you make out of high school? 2. How often were you paid this much (multiple choice) 3. What was your job title 4. How many hours did you work per week? YOU NEED AT LEAST 30 RESPONSES. Without 30 responses, you will not be able to continue on this project. Above is a view from inside the form creation. Make sure that you select text and check for numbers (an option at the bottom)
Make sure that you go to your survey, take it and test it for results. It generates a new spreadsheet in your google drive account with the data inside of the sheet. This is a link for mine, if you click "send form", you can copy the link from there. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1AX3V-DDQEpeymcRpSMSCZheoSar79P7pleMpHRF-HsI/viewform

Part 2 of Charting a Budget

This is where we are so far with this project: 1. We set up a google drive account. 2. We created a spreadsheet and shared it with me. 3. We used colors to do a checkoff budget matrix based on the data in our notebooks (p.496 in the text) 4. We input the values of the expenses 5. We made the sheet calculate both monthly totals and category totals. 6. We made the sheet check that our totals matched (True/false) 7. We made a pie chart & bar chart of the category totals. 8. We made a line chart of the monthly totals. This is all duplicate of what we did in our casio graphing calculators and in our notebooks before we began using the computers.

Day 1 of Charting A Budget

Remember, this is the set of data and charts that we made on our Casio calculators in class.

Day 2 of Charting a Budget

Greetings! This is a screen shot of what we are working on. Make sure that it is titled lastname_p#_charting a budget. This data is on p. 496 in the text or in your notebook as I have scanned below. Notice these things: 1. For the checkoff matrix, we colored the cells instead of putting checkmarks. 2. The title! Gotta title it, don't leave it as 'untitled spreadsheet' 3. Make sure that you 'share' it to me, click 'share' in blue, my e-mail address is: mathcintech@gmail.com (you can cut & paste it from here) 4. We will continue this project into next week, it is based on 10.3 in your text/notes. Great work so far!

Welcome back from Fall Break. A week has gone by since, but it was spent mostly on AIMS. So far since we came back we learned about a number called "Standard Deviation". This number tells us how much a set of data varies from average in the given set. We analyzed several football teams, finding that Arizona teams are extremely inconsistent. Now this week, using that same standard deviation number we are assembling our own normal distributions (bell curves). Remember, the key values are 68%, 95% and 99%. Tomorrow we are going to move on to figuring out numbers that are in between those standard deviations. We will be applying something called z-scores. It's exciting to see you all excel at this, it's a tough topic but I know you can do it.

Fall Break

Great job by several of you this first quarter. Looking forward, over the next quarter we will be putting together a budget using the types of data we have been calculating so far. Keep in mind that your projects are part of the tests/quizzes/portfolio portion of your grade so as long as you do well on them, we should see some great increases in overall grades as the end of the 1st semester approaches. Over the fall break, it will be helpful for you to begin collecting data for your budget project. The data that we need is from at least 30 adults. Find out how much they made at their 1st job. Keep in mind that they may have worked different hours and been paid different ways (piecework, hourly, commission etc). The number that we will ultimately need is their monthly income. Many of you have already risen to challenges in class. Keep up the good work and enjoy your break. Mac

10 Practice Quiz Solution Set

10 Practice Quiz (only over 10.1 & 10.2)

10.2 Problem Set Solutions

10.2 Problem Set: Electronic Utilities

10.2 Modern Cellular Pricing

We didn't work all of these out, there are additional ideas to explore also however we can't spend a month on the topic. Student progress in class was remarkable on this.

10.2 TV, Cable & Internet Package Comparisons

10.2 Electronic Utilities

10.1 Utilities Problem Set Solutions feel free to comment if there are any mistakes.
10.1 Problem Set:
My how fast a week goes by! For the past week we studied section 10.1 of the text (Utilities). I will post our notes, problem set and solutions probably later today. We will be starting 10.2 which will go quickly because it's kind of dated (it's on cellular and internet plans which change much faster than textbooks).

Now the moment that you have all been waiting for: Practice Quiz on Personal Earning Power!

Friday, September 6, 2013

As those of you who have been closely following along in your textbook / ebook have noticed, we are at the end of chapter 6 (personal earning power). In the coming week we will hopefully spend some time in the computer lab structuring our first project. As well, we will likely have a quiz over chapter 6. I hope you all have a nice weekend and look forward to seeing you back here on Monday after our mighty Panther Varsity Football Team defeats Westwood at Alhambra.
Hopefully this will be the last time that my promethean board fails and we have to use the document camera. This is a scan of when we went over this problem set in 7th period.

6.4 Problem Set

6.4 Notes & Examples Employee Benefits Values

6.3 Production Pay Solution Set

Remember that Example 5, referenced in #25 had a piecewise function of: c(x) = 0.20x when x is less than or equal to $750 c(x) = 0.22x when x is greater than $750 but less than or equal to $1,000 c(x) = 0.25x when x is greater than $1,000 where x= $profit and c(x) = commission This example can be seen in the flipchart posted below "6.3"

Under Construction

Obviously this site is under construction which it will remain like a great highway for a very long time.  When the year begins I will post all relevant course information here for Math Technology 2013-2014.  Congrats to class of 2014 in advance.

It's gonna be a great year!
